The jubilant crowd consists mostly of well dressed young people.
Most probably, had they dressed like this a few month later,
they would have been accused of being "Burjui" and possibly sent to
Siberia.
But a few month later, they would also not have been so jubilant.
Before encountering communism face to face, many Czernowitzers
were communists or at least had communists leanings.
In Romania during the late thirties it was dangerous to be a communist,
even if not a card bearing one, just accused of being a sympathizer.
After one year of living under Soviet rule, there were not many
communists
left in Czernowitz.
