Mimi,

this reminds me on an experience in Vilna, Lithuania about a year ago. Close to my hotel was the Choral Synagogue, beautiful decorated in moorish style. I was curious about the interior decoration but the building was closed whenever I passed by. I took my chance at Shabbat evening; a very old man opened and brought me to a room with other very old men. While I had a pleasant conversation with the youngest person there in English I realized the old gentlemen were talking in Yiddish with each other. This gave me the chance to follow the conversation. The topic was: those young folks don't speak Yiddish any more, they simply are not interested. After they finished the complains they continued in Russian. I guess it's similar in Czernowitz.

Christian
