Nevertheless, they spent the money to upgrade the airport...and every
incoming Carpatair flight is fully booked. On one of my recent flights there
was a large group of Swiss academics coming for a meeting at the
University, and they told me that this is a regular occurrence involving
several universities, and not just from Europe. Getting hotel bookings is
also becoming more difficult..and it is not locals moving into hotels!!
There are quite frequently Austrian tourist groups too, apart fom the
ex-Czernowitzers of various kinds and their descendants. Not all doom and
gloom!! Cornel

Right.

I've been hearing this plane story for the last 10 years. Who wants to go
there, except us, the List members and other former Czernowitzers?
Yesterday I spoke to my cousin Misha who, unfortunately, still lives there
with his 83-years old mother, my Hlyboka-born aunt.

According to him, the economy in Cz is bad as never before. The only big
plant (former Legmash) is about to closed down, many young people are
unemployed. Misha is unemployed too. He is not feeling very well but prefers
not to visit doctors as he doesn't trust the failing medical services there.

Misha lives in a gorgeous Chernowitz apartment (see attachment) but they
don't have money to renovate the building.

The only pockets of relative prosperity in Ukraine are in Kiev,
Dnepropetrovsk and Donezk. The Jewish communities there are building
impressive synagogues and establishing Jewish schools.

But not in Czernowitz/Chernivtsi.
