On one of my trips we landed in Reutte , Tyrol .
It was late and finally I found a place to sleep.
The landlady was old and we exchanged a few
customary sentences.
She was curious about my strange German and
asked where I came from.
"Ich bin Jude , Ostjude."
She looked at me for a time and said:
" Das waren grausame Zeiten " ( those were cruel times)
I didnt say a thing but thought to myself:
" You're telling me ?"
