Hardy,

This is so true... In my childhood in Czernowitz of the late 1960's,
that was universally understood... Just forgiving, without being able
to exact fearful retribution - would be interpreted as a sign of
weakness... Or, in Al Capone's famous words, " A kind word and a gun
is better than just a kind word"... It was true in our childhood, it
is still true in our adult lives...
