Dear Ruth,
G-d bless you for keeping reminding the List members (and the world) about
the atrocities that happened in our native Bukovina. As a witness from the
second generation of survivors, I heard similar horror stories from my
family members.
Not everybody was lucky to be protected by A. Popovici. There were thriving
communities in all the villages and little towns outside Czernowitz which
became completely obliterated.
Do we have the realistic numbers of people who lived (and perished) outside
Cz? Does anyone cares about putting up their school photographs on the Ephes
website? (Yes, there were schools and community buildings in small towns,
they all could read and write and they sent their children to the best
schools in Czernowitz!).
What happened to the Bukovina Holocaust project?
Would the local authorities open the archives concerning the atrocities
involving the local peasants during the WWII?
I know they exist because in the 1960s my father, Oscar Kraft, was given the
names of their neighbours in Hliboka who looted their houses and who were
involved in the murder of entire families.
Serah Kraft

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] The Board of the Czernowitz Jewish Community in 1935
I found one familiar name.
Dr. Jakob Geller a prominent Zionist figure (a distant family member) often
visited his parents in the village of Milie where my grandfather's farm
stood,
and where we spent our idyllic summers.
On July 1941 Mr. Geller and his daughter came to Milie and were caught in
the
most barbaric massacre of the entire Jewish population.
One. surviving witness saw how the peasants forced him to watch the murder
of
his thirteen-year-old daughter whom thy cut to pieces with a saw on top of a
pile of wood. Then they killed him the same way.
See the testimony on pages 46-47in "Ruth's Journey" A Survivor's Memoir.
