To correct what Serah and Hardy wrote about the gravestones
from the old Jewish cemetery which was located in the lower part of
the city.
During the Russion period after WW2, these stones were used to build
the steps
to the Turckenbrunnen. When the whole area around the Turckenbrunnen
was rebuilt in 2008, these stones were dumped somewhere at the edge
of the city.
I have seen a photograph which showed a mound of earth and stones,
among which
were stones from the old cemetery. Unfortunately, I do not know where
exactly
this mound is located.
Currently the Jewish cemetery on Zelena street is guarded, so as to
prevent
the destruction or the stealing of gravestones. But many of the
oldest gravestones,
or those which were not put on a proper foundation have either fallen
or stand crookedly
and threaten to fall.
For three days, Sasha and I walked pretty much all over Czernowitz,
most pavements
are in deplorable state, even on the Herrengasse some of the small
cubic paving stones
are loose in their place, or are no longer in their place, but are
sitting on top of other stones.
But nowhere in the city, did we see gravestones being used as paving
stones.
