In the footsteps of Christian.
Analyzing the texts of the tombstones we can see following:
  1. In Galizia all stones are in Hebrew.
  2. In Bukovina province stones are in Hebrew but family names
sometimes appear in German at the bottom.
  3. In Czernowitz the older stones are in Hebrew only.
       Humble and uniform.
Then the Jews became rich :
Stones carry Hebrew and German inscriptions.
       Jews get even richer:
Stones turn into black granite obelisks and inscriptions
        are in German only.
          Birds and lions join in.
Often joined by a poem by the family poet.
This is my general impression of the trend.
( The old graves are never vandalized).

Some Thoughts

Dear all,

Two weeks I traveled with my friends Petra and Achim through Eastern Galicia
and Northern Bukovina. It was a very intense and emotional journey to the
heritage of a vanished Jewish world. We visited 27 towns and villages, many
spots made a deep impression. With some distance I would like to summarize
some experiences and reflect them. What did we see? Who commemorates what
and how? And I want to thank all those people who enabled the journey in
many different ways and observed it with passion.
