Thank you Mark! Yes, I very much liked the expressive folcloristic style of this headstone. There is also a very well done deer (http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/942653_3176831115914_1718835483_n.jpg). I think it was made by the same artist who created my favorite lion in Czernowitz (http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/551928_2416819436097_477038765_n.jpg). We would need to know more about the art of Bukovinian stone carving but unfortunatly all this beautiful pieces of art are anonymous and we will never know more about the artists who created them.

Warm wishes
Christian

Dear Christian,

I previously expressed my appreciation for your sharing your experiences and photos to you directly, but I want to add my voice to that of other members of this List in acknowledging the talented and thoughtful postings of your last journey to Galicia and Bukovina.  Although there is only one stone from the Vashkivtsi Jewish cemetery in your online black and white collection, I am amazed that out of the 600 plus graves there you located this magnificent marker.  It is the same one I pointed out to the list in March since it is inscribed with the Hebrew prayer for the dead ("El Molai Rachamim"), which was then under discussion .  For those who missed it or would like to view it again, here is the link to a photo of it that includes its faded, but regal colors:
