Dear Irene, Yosif, Mimi, Edgar and Hardy,

Thanks all very much. I do remember vividly the days but could not recall the exact dates.

In particular I remember the day of - now I know - very likely March 29 - or perhaps even March 28 - when in the morning - around 9 or 10, I was standing at the window of our flat in Althgasse 7b, and suddenly saw a red army scout, in winter fatigues, with ready automatic gun (was new for me, because it had the drum like magazine which I had not seen before) walking carefully on the opposite pavement (he had come from the Rothkirch gasse, i.e. from Rosch), southward towards Austria-Platz.

The scene is before my eyes today like a black and white video clip. I recall to this day my amazement and admiration (I was just 11 at the time) at his valour and audaciousness - because he was alone, and only the day before had I seen plenty of Romanian troups - in moving forward, just warily looking left and right, to check for an eventual ambush. I suppose that after he had completed his survey he had reported back that everything was clear for the troups to move in from Rosch..

As a thoroughly contrasting situation I recall the day the Rumanian troups entered Czernowitz - now I know 5th July 1941. I was again at our flat's window and saw them marching in large regimental columns from the National Theater along the Rotkirchgasse towards the Rosch Kasserne. Again this scene registered and I see it vividly like a video-clip before my eyes. I was only 8 at the time.

Regards to all

Mordecai
