Hi Serah! This very much corresponds to my trip to Czernowitz in the early
60's when I found many speakers of Czernowitzer Deutsch....most of whom
still seemed to regard themselves as Oesterreicher. Cornel

Dear Irene,

Thanks for taking me and Hannah back in time.

Josef Oehlgisser used to entertain us, his students, by his amazing ability
to sight read music while he would position the books on the piano note
stand upside down. I met him in 2006 and he could still do the trick.

There were others German Jews from Cz who didn't leave in 1945 and who
contributed greatly to the culture and to the social life of the post-war
Chernovtsy: musicians, actors, teachers and many doctors (such as my
mother's uncle Dr Flohr, Dr Kulah, Dr Korn(feld?) and many others. Not too
mention the plumbers as only the local Chernowitzers were proficient in the
complicated system designed by the Austro-Hungarians.

The "true locals" visibly stood out in the first decades of the Soviet rule
but then started to blend in. I was surprised to hear the heavy Russian
accent in J.Oehlgisser's German. Well, time (and place) can change us but
we can't change time...

Serah
