I never before spoke to a London Czech but you might be surprised that some
Czernowitzers in the 1930th
before travelling to New York would say they want to go to Neviork. True,
Shakespeare was not mispronounced, nor was Corneille. Taking into
consideration that "deja vu" is even to-day pronounced by most english
speaking people (and also by others) as "deja view" a Neviork or
Nevzeeland or Nevcaledonia is not so terrible a mistake.
Now for God's sake how about Capek? Why did he not write his own name in a
way that any Czern. should know how to pronounce and if rightly pronounced
also easy to spell?
Also I forgot to mention Franz Molnar.
