Jerome, right through the Middle Ages and onwards Jewish merchants all over
Europe and the East communicated in Hebrew....which meant that their
commercial rivals could not understand! It was the common language of
commerce,so not exactly a "holy" language!..... Cornel

Czernowitzers and Novoselitzers

The prize goes to Irene Fishler, who explains that the original document
was not in cursive Yiddish at all as I thought it was, but rather in
cursive Hebrew. And in the document it says: "Signed today the 14th in
the month of Nissan of the year 5674 in (town?) Novaselitz of Bessarabia
on the border with Austria ."

You can read Irene's full commentary in the comments section of the post
on the blog at:
http://ehpes.com/blog1/2013/06/25/selling-chometz-in-novoselice-1904/

Thanks of course to Lara Diamond who photographed the original and sent
it to us, and then translated the names,

I will put a correction in the original Blog post.

Best,
jerome
