It is of course not true that the Russians when they retreated
in late June and early July of 1941 set fire to the city.
I think that Russian forces, may have tried, to set fire
to part of the city during WW1.
They certainly forced some Czernowitz Jews to retreat with them.
Some people retreated with them voluntarily.
And they certainly deported many people to Siberia
during the years they ruled Czernowitz.
In addition there were Czernowitzers who happened to be
in the interior of the Soviet Union when the war broke out.
Some of them were reunited with their families at the end of the war,
some perished during the war.
Does anyone know whether reliable numbers are known,
about the number of people deported, the number of those
willingly leaving with the Russians and the number of people
forcefully removed by the Russians as they left?
