Subject: [Cz-L] More highlights - IAJGS

Here are a few random highlights since my initial Sunday update:

Bucovina births database: Romanian-SIG has an ongoing project to create a
searchable vital records database for southern Bukovina. The initial
results are now online.
Description: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Romania/BucovinaVRs.htm
Search here: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Romania/ (Remember to
select "Bucovina" where it says "Region".

Daniel Horowitz announced a large update to the Czernowitz vital records
index online:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/databases/datasplash.html (Click on
Czernowitz Birth/Marriage/Death records)

I announced that all Sadagora tombstones have now been indexed and will be
online in the coming months via JewishGen's Online Worldwide Burial
Registry. Thank you to hard-working indexer, Noam Silberberg!

Sylvie G'sell presented information about her visits to Mogilev-Podolskiy
to the M-P Birds of a Feather Group. She expressed her vision for a
project to preserve the cemetery and create online indices.

Merle Kastner and Sylvie spoke about their Bukovina, Romania, and Moldova
roots trip to the Bukovina BOF and the Romania-SIG groups.

The Bukovina BOF was attended by about 18 individuals. Others with
Bukovina roots have contacted us since.

We learned that little has happened with Ukrainian Archives - not much new
presented from the director of the Ukrainian Archival System. (If I'm
wrong and you were there, please correct me!)

There was a good panel information about cemetery preservation efforts in
eastern Europe. I could only stay for half of it, but I didn't learn too
much except that it can be done. While I was there, no information came
out about how to best preserve cemeteries on an ongoing basis. Projects
were done but there seemed to be no plan for ongoing maintenance. (Again,
correct me if you were there and I'm wrong!)

At the Bukovina BOF meeting, I made an important announcement on behalf of
Edgar Hauster. It seems he has been extremely busy, as usual, and has
created something of much value to Czernowitz researchers. I'll leave it
to Edgar to fill in the details!

Cadastral maps for Bukovina exist in one of the Austrian State Archives
according to Gesher Galicia leader, Pamela Weisberger. If I understood her
correctly, these maps cover rural areas, not towns, cities, and villages.
We need to learn more.

Pamela also reported that the L'viv State Historical Archives have
Rabbinical records for >350 communities in Galicia, 1780-1942. Could they
possibly have any of the Bukovina Rabbinical records? If anyone plans to
visit L'viv, perhaps they can find out.

OK, this has become a much longer message than I envisioned! Over and out.

Reporting from Boston,

Bruce
