Dear Friends,
On my last day at the conference, I spent most of my time learning about
research in towns outside of Bukovina - but in nearby Galicia. It was a
very interesting day, so here are the highlights:
a) Brody - the presenter has coordinated a huge project to
document/preserve the cemetery, index vital records microfilmed by the
Mormons, and translate a very significant Yizkor book. Records for Brody
(and many other Galician towns) are searchable here
<http://search.geshergalicia.org/> as well as via the JRI-Poland project.
I'm interested in Brody because it's one of the towns my Bukoviners came
from prior to their Bukoviner days. One of my great great great
grandmother's was born in Brody in 1830 according to a Record I found in
Radautz!
b) Zamosc BOF group - my Mom's Mom came from Zamosc, Poland - probably
off-topic for our group!
c) I missed a very important highlight earlier: Sylvie Gsell has been in
touch with Rachel Leigh, the daughter of Jacob Drucker. (For those of you
unfamiliar with the importance of Jacob Drucker and his list of holocaust
era burials in Mogilev Podolskiy, just Google "Drucker Druker's List
Mogilev Podolsky".) So, Rachel reported to Sylvie that she has completed
a book (in English) about her father's accounting of holocaust era burials
in Mogilev. These burials include many for exiles from Bukovina. The
book is reported to include the complete lists and maps from her father.
It will be self-published, and will soon be available for a price to be
determined.
Reporting now from New York City,
Your man on the scene,
Bruce
