Hi all=2C
Yes=2C we all recall the queues for practically everything=2C both in 19=
40/1 and in 1944/5=2E And not once did the counter close before we reach=
ed it=2ETwo related stories=2E =
I recall once we had to go somewhere a bit far from the city=2C in an ag=
rarian area=2E Fields all around us=2E A lot of people with tin cans or =
bottles or various other containers=2C queueing up behind a petrol tank=2C=
to obtain some ration of 5 or 10 liters=2C that we needed for the lamps=
or small petrol cookers=2E It was a bright day=2E Suddenly the sky clou=
ded in in part=2C with half of it quite close to us quite dark=2E Above =
us the sky was still bright and the sun shining=2E Within a couple of mi=
nutes a torrential rain just up to a couple of meters from us=2C like a =
wall=2E After a quarter of an hour the rain stopped=2E We continued to q=
ueue on dry soil=2E This was the first time I had watched a =22Platzrege=
n=22 that covered only one area=2C below the cloud=27s boundaries=2C and=
did not reach further=2E It made a deep impression on me - I was just 8=
years old=2C and the scene returned to me many times in subsequent year=
s=2E
When I grew older=2C and heard many Jewish jokes=2C I realised that such=
an event was probably a basis for the famous joke of the two Khassidim =
who boast about the prowess in creating Nissim of their Rebbes=3A =
One boasted - My Rebbe had to travel home in his open wagon=2C on a lous=
y country road=2E Suddenly a torrential downpour=2E My Rebbe raised his =
arms and uttered a blessing - and Lo!!! there was rain on the left side =
of the road=2C there was rain on the right side of it=2C but on the road=
itself there was no rain=2C and my Rebbe came home completely dry!!!
Responded the second one=3A Is this a Ness=3F Listen to the Ness of my R=
ebbe=2E My Rebbe returned home on a similar road on the eve of Shabbes=2C=
and the horses got tired=2C and the Shabbes was approaching and he was =
still far from his village=2E So my Rebbe raised his arms and uttered a =
blessing=2C and Lo!!! there was Shabbes on the left side of the road=2C =
and there was Shabbes on the right side of the road=2C but Friday remain=
ed on the Road until the Rebbe reached his home!!!
And=2C on such a joyfull note - another story=2E I was standing in a que=
ue at our lunch counter=2C when one of the older co-workers=2C who had s=
erved in the British Army in WWII=2C in the Egyptian and Lybian deserts=2C=
told this=3A He was standing in a queue just behind two Brits=2C approa=
ching the Naafi counter=2E Just when they reached the counter=2C the cor=
poral behind the shutter closed it down=2C because he had run our of goo=
dies=2E So one of the Brits turned to his buddy and said=3A Well=2C at l=
east we queued up!
Regards to all
Mordecai
