I do not know the exact date on which I left Czernowitz,
but it was in the summer of 1945 and after school had closed
for the summer vacation.
Thousands of Czernowitz Jews left at the same time.
We had to gather in Tereblesti and wait our turn to cross the border.
There were no cars to take us there, even horses and carts were
difficult to obtain,
many people had to make at least part of the journey on foot.
Only a relatively small number of people were allowed to cross the
border
on anyone day. No one was allowed to take any valuables with them.
Not as if anyone had many valuables; but jewelry was baked into cakes,
put into the shoulder-pads of coats, into the heels of heavy shoes.

I still can visualize my father being searched because a "Spitzel" (spy)
who was standing on a cart, had noticed my father trying to slip
a gold pocket watch into the pocket of a man who had already passed
inspection.
The pocket watch had been my grandfather's and had more sentimental
than real value.
But my mother had blackened it with coal and it looked terrible.
The border guard looked at it and said: "tphoo".
The watch made it to Israel and to my cousin named after the
grandfather who owned it.

Mimi

For days before we left, my father was burning books,
he did not want anyone to use them as toilet paper.
