Hello,

   My name is Sidoni=E9 Surkis, and I am the grand-daughter of an =
emigrant
from around Zaleschiki at the turn of the last century. Mechl (Michael)
Surkis suggested that I write to you to see if you had any information
regarding any family connections that may still be there, or anywhere in =
the
world. I am hoping that you can help.

   This is the information that I have about my family: my grandfather
Isadore Surkis came over at the age of 4 with his brother, Jacob, who =
was
about 20. They came without other family, and apparently migrated =
through
Montreal. They must have come to the US illegally as I can find no =
record
of either of them arriving. They came sometime between 1902 and 1905, I
BELIEVE. Jacob married shortly after moving to NYC and my grandfather =
was
raised with his children. Jacob had two sons, Joe, who died in an ice
skating accident, and Samuel, who had two daughters. They came from a =
town
whose spelling I do not know but is something like Zaleschiki in =
Ukraine.
According to my grandfather=92s Bronx death certificate, his mother=92s =
name was
Gitel, but there was no space for a father=92s name. There was a cousin =
in NY
named Arthur Schickler, probably close to my grandfather=92s age=85A Dr. =
Max
Surkis in Montreal was the nephew of my grandfather. My father was =
Joseph,
also known as George, Surkis, son of Isadore and Sabina (Kramer) Surkis, =
and
was born and raised in the Bronx. This is all that I know of the Surkis
side of my family=92s history. I have been searching for years for =
someone
who might know more of my family and my family=92s history. =20
