These days, there were many events in the U.S. commemorating the 50th
Anniversary of the March on Washington and the "I have a Dream" speech by M.
L. King. There was little mention of another eloquent speaker who directly
preceded Dr. King at the Lincoln Memorial. He was Joachim Prinz, a Reform
rabbi who emigrated from Germany in 1937 and had become one of the prominent
Jewish Civil Rights activists. (His speech can be heard on
http://www.joachimprinz.com/images/mow.mp3 .)
I vaguely remember that Rabbi Prinz visited Czernowitz in the mid thirties
and thrilled local Zionists with his oratory. However, after his return to
Berlin he wrote a travelogue in which Czernowitz got a black eye in his
scathing description of the "Schwarze Boerse" (illegal currency exchange) on
the sidewalk of the Postgasse. The local press was infuriated and the
antisemitic agitators were delighted.
Do any of my senior Landsleute remember more details?
