Hi,
the other beach opposite to Gaensehaeufel was named "Africa", there was sand
and the water without stones. I made this experience..at 14 I swam across
the Pruth, alone, rested a bit on the sandy beech, there were bushes also,
for lovers...and tried so swim back.. the waves were so fast and I knew that
around the bridge found many young boys the death, so on the middle of the
river I cried for help, a man swam to me and put me back on the shore, with
the words, I never forgot: "If I would be your father I would give you some
bets"...and I answer, "My father is dead"...this was my one visit to Africa

I remember the expedition to the Prut on the other side of the bridge
where the water was shallow enough for children to bathe.
Mum used to pack a pick nick basket. It was for us youngsters quite
an adventure. I am not sure, but the area was popular it may have
been named Gaensehaufel ( Geeselot).

[Please post in Plain Text next time --thanks]

The Prut is one of the very few allusions my father Herman Schimmer

made about his childhood in Czernowitz. He used to go swimming with his

friends there, much to the horror of his mother who thought he would never =
come

back from such expeditions...! I can almost see him splashing around.
Thank you very much Edgar for posting the photos!
