And I remember the Mehlplatz in 1944-1945 when what was sold on it
were old clothes and old shoes and assorted "Alte Sachen".
There were no new clothes to be had and most families wanted to sell
what they could not use, they needed the money to buy food on the
black market
and they knew that if they should want to cross the border illegally,
they would not be able to take with them anything except the clothes
on their back.
My mother sold her and my father's clothes and with the money
bought clothes which she could alter for me.
Currently the Mehlplatz is one of the nicest places in Chernivtsi.
It offers open views of the city. The buildings around it are beautiful
and pedestrians can stroll unhindered across it.
