We the ,old time Jews of Cz , are related to as German speakers.
As most of us were post Habsburg born our schooling was in Rumanian.
Private schools were in German but not for all.
As a result our German deteriorated .
We spoke bad German and worse Rumanian.
But we also spoke horrible Russian and almost no Ruthenian.
But Yiddish we spoke well ? Did we ?
My Babe spoke Yiddish well and some Goyish
(how we called the Ruthenian). But bothing more.
How then did we communicate ?
In the middle of a conversation when short of a term we could
easily fish out something from the salad of terms
piled up in our minds.
As a default. It always worked.
But Czernowitzers wrote wonderful German poetry ?
Yes , but not for all Czernowitzers .
They would need a Duden.
