Dear Edgar,

Thank you very much for posting those articles today, at the "100th
birthday" of this institution.

It was a most impressing event with some funny things happening there .

Of course I am proud that my grandmother's brother, the Baumeister Herman
Elias Brandes actually "built" the Toynbee Halle.

I have more family connections to this place; my uncle Chayim Ehrenkranz was
a teacher ( and a principal ) at the "Safa Ivriah" school ( Abraham
confirmed this;thanks !).

 My aunt Dwora Schechter, a Hebrew teacher, taught there at some time .

I have family connections to lawyer Dr. Schmierer mentioned in the
newspapers.

About my visit to the Toynbee Hall in May 2011, I'll tell you soon.

Czernowitz Toynbee Hall, which took place just A CENTURY AGO TODAY, on
16.11.1913 in Czernowitz.

All of you, who read (Gothic) German, will enjoy the articles out of "Der
Jüdische Volksrat", dated 28.11.1913 and "Czernowitzer Allgemeine Zeitung"
and "Bukowinaer Post" respectively, both dated 18.11.1913, sharing the mood
of the opening ceremony. For all others we have transcribed the main
articles, offering to you the opportunity to translate them via
GoogleTranslate or straightaway from the Blog.

The "creme de la creme" of the Bukovinian society as well as many guests
from Vienna and abroad attended this major event. I'm sure, that one or two
will "meet" ancestors and friends at the Toynbee Hall. (Irene, please look
for building contractor Brandes; Marion, please look for the deputy mayor
and privy councilor Barleon!)

Dr. Markus Winkler refered in his lecture on the Toynbee Hall in Czernowitz
to Abraham Kogan's impressive testimony on the Jewish education during the
"Ghetto Period"
