Czernowitzers...

Faith in progress and charity were "en vogue" in Europe, Austria and Czernowitz in the year 1913, just a few months before the outbreak of WW1; nearly nobody anticipated the horror and the millions of victims to come.

A couple of days ago we celebrated the inauguration of the Jewish Toynbee Hall in Czernowitz and today I'm publishing the "Annual Report of the Emperor Franz Joseph Jubilee Orphanage in Czernowitz for the Year 1912", released in 1913 at:

Click on the front cover to download a PDF version of the booklet, enjoy its art nouveau layout and learn more on

- the 53 orphans (p. 3/4)
- the 12 donors of the orphanage (p. 15)
- the 150 founders of the orphanage (p. 16/17)
- the 200 members - out of 30,000 Jews in Czernowitz - of the orphange foundation (p. 32 -38)

and discover your ancestors among the orphans or the benefactors! Enjoy the posting and "stay tuned" for more "bonus material" following my motorcycle journey 2013 to Bukovina!
