In 1940 the Soviets removed the Rumanian Unirea monument from
the Unirea Square , thats how they called our Ringplatz.
Named for the 1919 union with Rumania .
How did the Soviets call it ? Red Square ?
They needed a monument and fast.
A sculpture takes time so they settled for an obelisk made out
of wood of which Czernowitz had plenty ,draped it linen and put a red star
on top.
This landmark stood for almost a year.
During the war I cant remember any monuments on the Ringplatz.
They were too busy losing a war.
