I think that sums it up. There is a geographical Heartland (in English), and
there there is a poetical Heartland (translated from German).

According to an article by Edward Hirsch on Heartland in the Poetry
Foundation, "Paul Celan said:
'A poem, as a manifestation of language and thus essentially dialogue, can
be a message in a bottle, sent out in the—not always greatly hopeful—belief
that somewhere and sometime it could wash up on land, on heartland perhaps.
Poems in this sense, too, are under way: they are making toward something.'"

In
this case, Cornel is right, Herzland is a poetic term
referring to the poetry and poets
from Bukowina. Furthermore, it is a
term coined by Paul Celan. Chargraff was honored as
a writer and cultural critic.

That's the formal meaning. When Americans refer to the
Heartlands, we usually think of the first places developed
from farming or of rural areas..
