The uncles were all born between 1892 and 1896. I'm sure they learned languages (including Chinese) the way most immigrants learn language. Either school or the streets. The daughter of the uncle who went to Shanghai (and was born there) spoke perfect Chinese while she was alive. I have no way of knowing if they learned German or Polish in school. But language is a necessity in commerce. Even those who go to school do not remain grammatically perfect. All language developes idioms and slangs. No language remains "pure."

My sister learned Spanish from the streets and even qualified as a certified Court Translator while I learned it in school. If you are wise, you adapt.
