Mimi, you misspelled trottoir but you also opened my eyes.  I never realized how many French words we had in our Czernowitzer-Austrian German. Mother used to love giving these words a very French pronunciation.  She should have become an actress. I never heard the word Fussgaengersteg before.  I guess French and German competed in pre-war Europe to be the Lingua Franca which English has now become.  The list has become my late-life 101 on so many subjects. A few years ago I was invited to an affair at the Romanian Consulate in Toronto. At one point they asked all guests to introduce themselves and tell the crowd a bit about ourselves.  I told them I just came to teach them how to sing Traiasca Regele.  Some of the younger ones didn't know what that was.
