Since Hardy wrote about the words denoting various maladies
used by "Bessere Menschen" and "Amchu" in Czernowitz.
I would like to mention the home remedies used to cure some of them.
To cure a stomach ache, the lid of a large pot was placed in the oven.
When it was hot, the lid was wrapped in a towel and placed on the
stomach
of the affected person.
To disinfect a wound, a Lily petal which had been sitting patiently
in alcohol,
was placed on the wound and the wound wrapped in a piece of "Schmatte"
torn from an old shirt or sheet.
To alleviate a sore throat, you drank hot milk mixed with butter and
honey.
To extract the puss from an infected wound, a piece of onion
was placed on the cast iron stove, till it was cooked, then placed on
the wound
and bandaged with a clean "Schmatte".
Does anyone remember "Essig saure Tohn-Erde"?
I cannot remember what it was used for, but I liked the sound of the
words.
