Hardy:
I just knew when I wrote my previous e-mail that you would challenge my
response that 1941 was a bad year for America too. Believe me, I didn't mean
to imply that my country experienced anything even remotely as horrific as
befell the unfortunate Jews of Czernowitz and other Eastern European
regions during 1941-1944. If so, I don't believe I would have survived.

But as a self-absorbed high school senior majoring in English as well as
in American and French soldiers and sailors, it was hard to understand the
horrors taking place in my father's native city and other parts of Europe.
Aside from radio and newspapers, we learned very little about the savage
brutality of the Germans, Rumanians and Russians from an occasional letter
coming through from Dad's cousins. There wasn't much my father could do
besides send money, clothes and encouragement.
When I joined the CZ List almost three years ago and read the
heartbreaking e-mail from many Czernowitzers who survived the bloody massacres, I
realized how fortunate we were that Grandpa Steinhauser had immigrated to
the United States thirty years earlier with his wife and four children. And
only because he was unable to feed his family on earnings as a tailor in
Czernowitz.. Believe me, I've never ceased to be grateful and humble to
him and truly hope that you and everyone who survived that black and bloody
period will experience good health, happiness and lots of love for the rest
of your lives... and thereafter

Iris,
Bad year for America ?
Did you see any Jap soldiers on you streets ?
Interesting that the two losers of the war, Japan and Germany,
are today the most democratic and prosperous in the world.
