Mimi,
Alexander Shcherbatyuk was a Ukrainian (I am not sure if he had any
Jewish descent) and an active member of a Messianic Jewish
Congregation (there are two of those in Chernivtsi, he belonged to
Beit Simcha). Members of this congregation (not to be confused with
Jews for Jesus, although there are many similarities) clearly identify
themselves as Christians, but at the same time observe all Jewish
holidays, use Jewish terminology, most are militantly Zionist and
pro-Israel, etc. Wikipedia provides an adequate description of this
phenomenon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messianic_Judaism). The site
of this community is in Russian, but the pictures will give you a very
good idea on what it is all about
(http://ieshua.org/category/obshhiny).
To complicate things even more, Shcherbatyuk's 12 year old son is a
student in the Chernivtsi Jewish School, where apparently the majority
of students have little or no Jewish connection.
That explains the confusion about Shcherbatyuk's religious identity in
the news reports:

What really matters here is that he was killed by a sniper, fighting
the corrupt government.
