I have no private information about the religious identity of
Alexander Shcherbaniuk,
nor do I consider this of importance. Many of the demonstrators were
Jewish.
But the fact that his son Dan, is a student at the ORT school does
not mean
that he is necessarily Jewish or not. All the schools in Chernivtsi
are financed
by the government and have to teach certain obligatory subjects.
But the Jewish schools receive financial support from outside sources
and are therefore better equipped and also teach additional subjects,
which are not taught in the other schools. Because of this, a large
percentage
of the students at the Jewish schools are not Jewish.
