Romantic interpretation (which lady?), but I'm afraid, that Charles (and Shelley) got it right. Erwin Javor, a Jew and a self-made business man from Austria, originating from Eastern Galicia, writes in his travel log for a journey to his roots in 2012 (!!!):

"My father spoke always despisingly about Huzuls and Ruthenians and their atavistic, uneducated, violent, sottish and sanctimonious anti-Semitism..."

A few lines later, Erwin emphasizes his own position now, i. e. in 2012 (!!!):

"Basically, there the time stood still. Many of them [Huzuls and Ruthenians] are still unchanged: ready to use violence, crude, paternalistic, nervously hidden behind their tavern roaring..."
