What a fascinating story. The naming of children is very interesting. My mother, who was born in Kolomea, was named for her paternal grandmother who died young. So my grandmother added a middle name for good luck for a neighbor who died very old. My mother is now 95. My grandfather wasn't too thrilled at the time. As it turned out, he died young.

Hi Linda
My maternal grandmother was nicknamed "Babale" by the
"Sadegerer Rebe". Despite being born as Rebecca Weiner, and
after her marriage officially - Rebecca Ruhm. Everybody in
the family took care to call her "Babale". She was born in
Storozhinetz and became very ill as a child. Her mother who
was from Sadagura wrote her brother in Sadagura to go to the
Rebe there and see if he can help. The Rebe ordered that the
first step must be to change her name to Babale in order to
fool the "Malakhamus" - the Angel of Death who coming to
look for child will find a Babe and therefore turn back. The
next thing the Rebe ordered was that the child should come
from Storozhinetz to live near his court in Sadegere. My
Grandmother's parents followed the Rebe's instructions and
sent her to live with her uncle in Sadagura. She stayed
alive and later married my grandfather, moved with him to
Suczawa (Shotz),and despite her poor condition gave birth to
three children, among them my mother. She perished on the
way to Transnistria . "HashemYikom dama" Let the Lord avenge
her blood.
