You all concentrate on the etymology ,
What about the custom ?

Edgar , Hardy and All,
Thanks to Iuliu Barasch I have discovered the importance of the Sterntikhel
for Jewish women ( and men) in Galicia...
Thanks to Sotheby's I have discovered that Sterntichel has nothing to do
with STARS ( = shtern in Yiddish) , but has everything to do with the
forehead = shtern in Yiddish= Stirn in German = frunte in Romanian =metzakh
in Hebrew.
Thanks to the painters Maurycy Gottlieb and Isidor Kaufmann on the www I
could SEE how those sumptuous head coverings looked like.
Thank you Edgar,
Best,
Irene
