Czernowitzers...

As far as we know, the Czernowitz Directory for the year 1936 is the latest edition before WW2. It is essential for illustrating the pre-war professional, economical, cultural and social situation of our (Jewish) ancestors. Therefore it has been integrated by the UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM in its Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database.

As most of you are aware, we have disclosed the address directory for the year 1936 (33,094 datasets) so far. But since the Czernowitz Directory 1936 offers a large quantity of additional information, we have decided to realize an in-depth analysis, starting today with "Czernowitz Directory 1936 In-Depth - Part 1: Street Nomenclature":

http://czernowitz.blogspot.de/p/czernowitz-street.html

The "Street Nomenclature for the Municipality of Czernowitz for the Year 1936" is not much more than a snapshot in - pre-war - time, but it's vital for a better understanding and for the correlation of the next parts to be disclosed soon.

At the end of the above mentioned post you'll find links to

- the 1936 original street nomenclature,
- the PDF version of the listing here above,
- the EXCEL version of the listing here above,
- the EHPES Czernowitz Street Name Translator (Thanks to Yosef, Bruce, Jerome and Marc!),
- the CZERNOWITZ BUKOWINA 1924/25 Street Name Translator (Thanks to Othmar Andrée!),
- the 1936 address section (33,094 datasets),
- the USHMM Holocaust Survivors and Victims Database.

Happy Passover, enjoy the publication and "stay tuned" for Part 2: Czernowitz Yellow Pages 1936!
