Regarding brands - it is rather ironic but in my youth in Romania and in Canada I had no interest in or consciousness of brands - and then I ended up spending the bulk of my working years on Madison Avenue building brands. 

But there was one brand in Romania I recall quite clearly because it led to my learning about the birds and bees. I would have been about 8 and had met some street urchins in a market. They looked suspicious. They urged me to go to a drug store on the other side of the street where, they said, they were giving away some chocolates.  They told me to ask for "Ola Gum."  I had seen signs with that name outside of drug stores but had never been curious enough to ask anyone. This, of course, was a brand for condoms.

Sensing these boys were trying to play a trick on me, I crossed the street and then ran home. When I told mother and dad about this experience, their looks told me that here I had a subject that got them uptight. They patted me on the head and said that that was nonsense, nothing, those boys were just joking.

Their reaction got me more curious and so when they were not around I asked our maid about this. She gave me a full explanation about how babies were made and what a condom was and how it was used and why. She sounded like a real expert on the subject. Thinking back I get the impression that if I had been just a few years older, she might have been willing to demonstrate as well.
