Generally speaking, a hundred years ago,
Jews in all European countries were used
to a certain amount of Anti-Semitism.
In most countries, discrimination against Jews was legal
and often instigated by the governing authorities.
In Austro-Hungary, all citizens had equal rights.
This in itself meant that Jews were better off in Austrian-Hungary
than under Russian or Romanian rule and Jewish citizens
of the monarchy were very well aware of this.
But government officials and military officers as well as soldiers
were often very Anti-Semitic and used every opportunity
to demonstrate this.
Both my grandfathers served in the Austrian army,
one before WW1 and one during WW1. Neither of them told
of being treated particularly badly because of their being Jewish.
