I remember that as the German withdrew from Czernowitz a non german SS gathered many Jews - including myself my mother father and sister - and aimed a machine gun at us in a big hall and waited confirmation that he can shoot us - eventually a German SS let us go. I wonder whether the reason for the retrieve was because the Rumanian were worried what will happen when the Russian take over.
As we waited my father run out via another door and was shot in the leg.
Of note is that in the period when one army withdrew and another took over there was a lot of shop looting by some of the population.
