Lauren Bacall mother's family was from Bessarabia, most likely
Briceny or Kishenev, where the last name Bakal is found (about 200
records in Jewishgen). The name stems from the Turkish word "bakkal"
("a seller of vegetables"), but it does not necessarily imply the
Sephardic origin of the family, because this root was also borrowed
into Russian, Ukrainian and Yiddish to form the word "bakalea" which
means "dry goods store".

Lauren Bacall's maternal grandparents were Max (Maximillian)
Weinstein-Bacal and Sophie Jersawitz.
Maternal great-grandparents: Meyer Weinstein-Bacal and Leah [?] and
Alexander Siskind Jersawitz (likely anglicization of Hershovich) and
Bertha (Betty) Traubitz (Trobits).

There are two entries for Bacals in the 1936 Czernowitz directory
(thank you again Edgar!): Beniamin Bacal (str. Stefan cel Mare) and
Saul Bacal (piata Unirii), quite possibly Lauren Bacall's relatives.

On a lighter note, maiden name of Arseny Yatsenyuk's mother is Bakai,
and although the rumors about her Jewish origin are unsubstantiated,
who knows?
