Whatever the learned or hereditary Rabbis thought or said about the Baal Shem Tov, I can only recall - with intensive pleasure - the wonderful mornings or afternoons I spent on a bench in the Schiller Park - which was a few minutes walk from my home in Althgasse 7 - with my grandpa, absorbing the marvelous stories about the miracles performed by the Baal Shem Tov. At the age of 5 or 6, all these fantasies were so real, especially since the storyteller knew his trade - or perhaps even believed in it (he was a Nadworner khusid) .
Of course there was a specific purpose in telling the stories, and captivating the imagination and attention of the little kid, who was loathe to take anything substantial into his mouth (unbelievable today, but I recall vividly that I sat at a separate table in the kitchen, with my kinderfraeulein supervising my hour-long attempts to swallow a little food - with a threatening hazelnut rod lying besides the dish...).
But there, in the Schiller park, I swallowed in minutes the delicious toasts prepared by my grandpa, with plenty of butter inside, and plenty of garlic rubbed in on both sides of the toast . Those were the days of magic....
