I, too, did not grow up with much of a Jewish life. That spark came
from my maternal grandmother and her 2 remaining brothers when we saw
them. But it was still more cultural than religious. And yet, as I
get older, I feel myself being pulled closer and closer to the past.
I taped my grandmother talking about her life from Kolomea/Kolomyya to
her present, then in NYC. Unfortunately, there are questions today
that I didn't think of then. Only through research did I discover,
for example, that my maternal grandfather's stepmother came from
Radautz. Since my research, I've connected with relatives that I
either didn't know about or haven't seen since I was a little girl. I
won't have grandchildren to pass this along to but it has enriched my
life to know so much about where I came from and who I might be
related to. Explore those roots now. Many of those who survived the
Holocaust didn't tell their children much, if anything. It was too
painful. But look for them now so you can get a hint of why it was
unspoken. My great uncle never told his daughter about what happened
to the family and today she doesn't want to know. She knows enough
for her having been born before the war. Start that search now. It's
never too late. There's so much out there. And we are here to help
you.

But we do not have as many personal experiences of Czernowitz to relate, as those who lived there, or whose parents had stories to tell. So it is harder to take part in the debates or contribute to the memories. I think that is inevitable as time goes by.
