Ellen...
Thank you for bringing up this topic and at the same time for the opportunity to draw your attention to the Czernowitz Art Gallery, still available at
http://czernowitzgallery.blogspot.de/
I learned from the archives of the Czernowitz daily newspaper "Der Tag"
http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.de/
that following art exhibitions were organized during the interwar period between 1932 - 1935:
September 7, 1932: Solo exhibition George Baron Löwendal - Bernfeld Bookstore
October 30, 1932: Group exhibition Bukovinian Artists' Association
January 1, 1933: Solo exhibition Dr. Opanas Schewtschukewicz
February 28, 1933: Group exhibition Salogeanu, Nicu Pertache de Florian and Dr. Silagi
June 6, 1933: Group exhibition Dr. Wladimir von Zaloziecki and Moses Barasch - Toynbee Hall
August 18, 1933: Solo exhibition graphics Paul Konrad Hönich - Bernfeld Bookstore
September 23, 1933: Solo exhibition George Baron Löwendal - Romanian National Palace
April 8, 1934: Solo exhibition Isadora Constantinovici-Hein - Romanian National Palace
April 28, 1934: Solo exhibition Moses Barasch - Hotel Schwarzer Adler
September 22, 1934: Solo exhibition Jadwiga Sedelmeyer-Boronska - Polish National House
December 19, 1934: Group exhibition Bukovinian Artists' Association
It seems to me, that during the 1930ies there was not a particular museum of art in town. Enjoy the Czernowitz art!

> I will dare to introduce a topic. I recently viewed the Degenerate Art show at the Neue Gallery in NY. It dealt with the Nazi reaction to abstract and Jewish art. They held a humiliating modern art show in Berlin to highlight their objections. I began to wonder what the art scene was like in Czernowitz. Were there museums, what were they like?
