Not all Jews living currently in Czernowitz are old and I doubt
that many hide their Jewishness. It seems to me that in Chernivtsi,
just like formerly in Czernowitz, most people know each other
and could not hide their background even if they wanted to.
But you cannot compare the present Jewish community of 1500 people
to the former community of 50 000.
I still maintain that communism made people more sceptic
and less willing to participate in any joint endeavors.
Communism was not, as David Glynn writes, a long time ago.
The people who are now in their fifties still were educated in it.

Some Jewish young people have occasionally joined the foreign volunteers
and worked at clearing the cemetery and some of the wealthier Jews in
town
have donated money to CJCRO. But the majority do not.
