"Each person for himself" is a basic human nature that stands out as living
conditions get harsher. Everyone who visited there and other parts of
Ukraine (especially the rural parts) can see how not easy, life is.
Therefore are many attracted by the Jewish charity system. First of course
the Jews themselves. The present members of the Jewish community in
Chernivtsi have no emotional (family) ties to the remains of the past of
Jewish life in Czernowitz, like the Jewish cemetery The few like the late
Dr. Bursuk, of blessed memory, tried their best, but succeeded better in
towns like Novoselitsa where the task was of smaller scale and the fund
raising easier. With all the admiration one has for Mimi, Christian, and the
non-Jewish, non-Czernowitz background volunteer groups, a task of the scale
like the cleaning (not to speak of restoring) of the Chernivtsi Jewish
cemetery must have a serious contractor with proper financing. I don't think
the Khabadniks will have interest in harnessing an Oligarch for a cemetery
full with German inscriptions, and citations.
