Yes, the Bukovina changed hands several times, and the Brusilov
offensive was one of the worst episodes of fighting.

In my father's case, though, the family left already in 1914: withdrew
first to Hungary, and then to Bohemia. He and his mother and sister
stayed until the end of the war.
