The Austro-Hungarian Empire, like the Russian Empire and the French Republic, could actually be more advanced on women's rights issues, at least on schooling and study rights, than English-speaking countries. My Prague-born grandmother (1892-1992) was very disappointed not to be "allowed" to go to university to study medicine - this despite her very good relationship with her father, a Czech-language publisher and Prague city councillor. (He said "She'll be getting married anyway". Just unpack the assumptions and interdependencies in that statement!) Her near-contemporary, my maternal grandmother, did go to art college.

It's true that neither then-young lady probably ever expected to study away from her home town. But I expect their contemporaries in towns without a university or other tertiary college would expect to - this might have been a bigger hurdle.

The idea, as was maintained in Oxford and Cambridge in England, or to some extent in the old Scottish universities, until after WW2 - that the female make-up just didn't suit advanced study - this doesn't seem to have been part of the picture.

Subject: [Cz-L] Education of Jewish woman in Czernowitz

Dear list members,

I have been researching my Czernowitz Kranzdorf relatives for some
time. But have recently managed to find a lot of new information.

To my surprise, Irene Kranzdorf, born about 1906, attained a Phd in
German literature from Vienna university. Was this common for young
Jewish women from Czernowitz to go to Vienna for further education?
She was also a concert pianist!

Her thesis was on Faust in the novel. A rather strange topic I think
for a nice Jewish girl to be writing about...

I would appreciate your thoughts and any background you could share.

Kind regards

Michael Kransdorff
