If you're looking for Jews in Shakespeare you have to look at the rich and
the poor. Shylock was a caricature of the sly Jew, the Merchant of Venice
(I saw at least 6 times) with different actors but most impressive was
presented by Sir Lawrence Olivier. A city gentleman who is being cheated by
the "nice" Christians, taking away his daughter as well as his money and
being mocked at the trial as well!! and what's much worse, when shown at
the Globe theatre in London a few years ago, not with Olivier, it incited
an anti-Semitic demonstration!! A Jew could never be right.
As for money lending. Florence was built by the money-lending Medici's and
their "trade mark" as money lenders the 3 balls are still in use today! But
they were "good" Christians and one of them - to crown their power- became
Pope as well. Jews lent money to aristocrats who has lost it gambling,
drinking or women but it has never been returned because, as with the
"pound of flesh" in the merchant, the Jew had no court hearing. As I wrote
to Jerome the Jew was given the job as tax collector from the farmers in
Poland, they got a salary for it while the landlord incited against him.
Batshewitz Singer worth reading, about Jewish life in Poland.
