To add to what others and I wrote about this subject before:
A "Beamter" is anyone who works in an office,
from the word "Amt" in German.
Basically it was what we now in English mean by
" a white collar worker"
A "Beamter or a "Beamtin" job engendered greater respect
than a salesperson or factory job, but a "Privatbeamter"
was not as respected as a Regierung Beamter" (government official).
